Crema Coffee Garage is a specialty coffee roaster and cafe wholesaler with locations in Newcastle and Brisbane. Products and services include roasted coffee beans, cafe equipment and supplies, home and office coffee machines, Barista Training, alternative brewing, and machine repairs.

Due to ongoing growth of the business, they outgrew their current space and required a larger area in order to carry out operations. Along with other key motivators being better services for water, drainage, electrical and a pleasant space to operate, hold coffee machine demonstrations and display equipment.

Barr Planning worked alongside with the owners to achieve Development Consent for the site next door to their current space. The application was for a change of use to the site from a white good showroom to an artisan food and drink industry with associated internal and external works.

Challenges to the development process included demonstrating how the artisan food and drink industry definition was met, including presenting reasonable arguments regarding ancillary uses.

Project Planner Laura Robinson noted that; “The variety of uses contained within the building, made this an interesting and challenging project to work on, however it’s been rewarding to assist this local business grow.”
