Last week, team members Rebecca Johnston and Katrina Walker travelled to Port Macquarie to prepare a Social Impact Assessment (SIA) in support of a Development Application for Port Macquarie Hastings Council.

A key part of any SIA is understanding how a project may affect the people who live and work in the local area. During their time in Port Macquarie, Katrina and Rebecca undertook community consultation to capture the community’s perceptions of the project and identify any actual or perceived social impacts of concern. This included door-knocking local residents, conducting street interviews, and hosting a drop-in session at the local community sports centre. These conversations provided invaluable insights into what matters most to the community and how the project might influence daily life.

Engaging directly with communities not only strengthens the planning process but also ensures outcomes reflect local needs, priorities, and aspirations. By listening to community voices, we can deliver projects that balance development opportunities with positive social outcomes.

Undertaking regional projects outside metropolitan areas also gives our team the chance to step outside the everyday, experience community development and regionalisation policies firsthand, and connect with the people who are shaping the future of their towns. And yes — it’s always a great excuse for a road trip!
