Barr Planning, in partnership with the University of Newcastle Business School, hosted Leading Agenda: Outside Looking In – a thought-provoking evening exploring how the Hunter is perceived from beyond the region, and how these perceptions are shifting as we continue to grow and evolve.

The event brought together a diverse line-up of leaders, including Linc Horton, CEO of Newcastle Airport and Kyle Loades, Chair of Hunter Medical Research Institute (HMRI) who shared their perspectives on leadership, regional growth, and the Hunter’s evolving role on the national and global stage.

Following their presentations, Rebecca Johnston, Director of Barr Planning, facilitated a panel discussion featuring our two keynote speakers Linc and Kyle, Associate Professor Diep Nguyen from the University of Newcastle Business School; and Elle Kershaw, MBA Student and Senior Manager Workforce Planning at NSW TrainLink. Collectively, they shared their unique insights into leadership, regional identity, and the opportunities shaping the Hunter’s future – from aviation and defence to healthcare innovation and research excellence.

A key takeaway from the evening was clear: the Hunter is already evolving rapidly, and perceptions of who we are and what we represent are changing for the better. The consensus among speakers and attendees alike was that to continue this positive momentum, the region needs to speak with one voice – united, consistent, and confident in its identity and direction.

It will take collaboration, resilience, innovation, and heart to shape the Hunter’s next chapter. As a region, we’re passionate about where we live and what we do – and together, we have the opportunity to strengthen our shared story and move forward with purpose.
